Teacher Overview: The Science of Fire Forensics (pdf, 3 MB)

This document provides an overview for teachers of the entire Science of Fire Forensics pathway. It includes details on the knowledge gained from the online interactives and how the classroom investigations can be used to completement and extend this knowledge.

Context

The Science of Fire Forensics pathway is designed to provide students with an understanding of fire, fire dynamics, and fire behavior so that they can read a fire scene and build a claim for the fire’s location of origin and cause.

The videos and interactive investigations within the Science of Fire Forensics pathway are designed to be applicable in a whole-class or for students to engage with independently.

The Investigator’s Academy Notebook provides information and guidance for students as they complete the module.

There are also classroom investigations related to the fire triangle, heat transfer and ignition, and energy and combustion that are designed to complement the content in the online pathway and bring the learning out of the computer and into the hands of students.

Questions

  • What is Fire?
  • What are the elements of fire?
  • How does a fire develop?
  • How does fire behave?
  • How does ventilation impact fire?

Problem to be solved

  • Firefighters and fire investigators need to know basic fire science to both fight fires and to uncover the source of a burn.
